Automatic transmissions were developed in canada in the 1920's. see: automatic transmission they were first adopted commercially by gm in the 1950's in the states. so up until then, vehicle manufacturers, of which there were many in europe, had to use manual shift.. Of course, europe has shorter distances between cities and increased optimization, meaning the average driver would spend significantly more time under the driving conditions which favor manual transmissions.. No matter how tightly the clutch, stick-shift enthusiasts can’t reverse trend toward cars with automatic transmission..
